When observing the elodea leaf, you may have noticed that you could see all the way through the leaf as if it were transparent. Explain why this was not possible when observing the letter e in the previous lab. What conclusion can you draw about the thickness of specimens to be observed with a compound light microscope? Why would a microtome usually be needed to produce good permanent slides?
